La Jolla Open Water Information

Dawnella Stoddard

Over the years I have encouraged swimmers to participate in some of the local open water events. My thought is we live in San Diego and there is an ocean. They are capable of and should be comfortable swimming in the ocean. One such race is the La Jolla Open Water Swim. I think that the event also provides a great bonding opportunity for the group. It is Sunday September 8 at La Jolla Cove - 1160 Coast Blvd , La Jolla , California 92037

The information and sign-up links are here:

Each swimmer is required to check in on the day of the event at Scripps Park/ La Jolla Cove. Check in opens at 7:00 AM. Racing starts at 8am. Swimmers receive a t-shirt, cap, timing chip ankle band, and will be assigned a number. Timing is used for all awards and official results. There will be gold, silver and bronze medals awarded for each age group, in addition to the finisher medal for all regulation swimmers.

Races start and finish on the beach of La Jolla Cove. The swims consist of three legs with two left turns around two buoys. Swimmers will be placed in heats based on submitted 1mile pace. The first heat will be at 8AM. Parental approval is required for swimmers younger than 18 – a waiver is part of the sign-up process. Prior experience with open water swimming is strongly encouraged for all participants.
